The Betty N. Smith Collection consists of four series, divided by format. Series 1 is Paper Materials, subdivided by various types of content. Subseries 1.1 has files on her Career and Professional Activities, while Subseries 1.2 has information about her Performances and Teaching. Subseries 1.3 features Betty Smith’s Writings in a variety of genres, and Subseries 1.4 includes Research Materials used in all these activities, divided by subject. Subseries 1.5 contains Betty Smith’s extensive correspondence, and Subseries 1.6 is Photographs. Series 1.7 includes Oversized Items that are part of the Betty N. Smith Collection. Series 2 features several scrapbooks that document Betty Smith’s music and teaching career, as well as aspects of her Jane Hicks Gentry: A Singer Among Singers book. Series 3 contains Audio Recordings in several formats: audiocassettes, CDs, and LPs. Many of the audiocassettes are personal recordings of interviews or informal musical performances. Series 4 includes Objects, both plaques and framed awards, as well as weavings done by Betty Smith.
