What's Open Pedagogy?
"Open pedagogy is the practice of engaging with students as creators of information rather than simply consumers of it. It's a form of experiential learning in which students demonstrate understanding through the act of creation. The products of open pedagogy are student created and openly licensed so that they may live outside of the classroom in a way that has an impact on the greater community. Open projects frequently result in the creation of open educational resources (OER)" - University of Texas at Arlington, CC BY,NC.
The best way to "get" open pedagogy is to see it in action. Read this short article in the Chronicle of Higher Ed by Beth McMurtrie about the open pedagogy practices of professor Heather Miceli. If you aren't in the mood to read an article right now, just go right to her General Education website populated with student-created content produced as part of her open pedagogy classes.
Open Pedagogy at Mars Hill
Visit the Merlot.org site created by your Mars Hill Colleague, Dr. Bradly Alban for his HHP111: Health & Wellness course. Dr. Alban went straight into adopting an open pedagogy framework for his HHP111 class after adopting an OER textbook and participating in the OER training course sponsored by the CETL and the Renfro Library in the summer of 2021.
