The Center for Engaged Teaching and Learning fosters excellence in teaching and learning at Mars Hill University by providing resources, enrichment opportunities, faculty development, and strategies that support quality and innovative instruction.

Suggested Syllabus Policy

"Generative AI" refers to a number of different of artificial intelligence systems, apps, and assistants that can produce a variety of high quality "generated content" including text, images, audio, video, and more.

It is important for all users of Generative AI to understand that these systems can simulate but do not actually possess human-level intelligence. Generative AI systems do not "know" things; they are not "conscious" of whether statements or images they produce are "true" or "false." All of these systems are prone to "hallucinations," errors and omissions of fact, and failures in logic and computation.

Responsible and productive academic use of Generative AI is possible if AI-produced content is acknowledged with explicit citation, fact-checked using human-produced authoritative sources of information and edited for clarity and accuracy by the final human user.

Students at MHU should know that irresponsible use of Generative AI may involve them in violations of MHU's academic integrity policies (2022-2023 Student Handbook, page 62), because it may involve the use of unauthorized material, or plagiarism, and/or unauthorized collaboration on classroom assignments.

Currently, there is not an AI detector that will work with 100% accuracy.  The 2 listed here are ones that found an AI generated paragraph within a human written sample paper by CETL Board Members.
