"Insiders, outsiders, and class anxiety: Eudora Welty and Bob Dylan on the Medgar Evers murder."
Chapter in New Essays on Eudora Welty, Class, and Race, 2019.
Dr. Warfield says: This chapter examines how "insiders" and "outsiders" to the South conceive of the mindset of Southern racists and the complexity of Southern social relations, exploring how it came to pass that the 54-year-old Jackson, Mississippi "insider" Eudora Welty and the 21-year-old Northern "outsider" Bob Dylan produced artistic responses to the murder of Medgar Evers that shared such similar misidentification of the killer's class identity.
